Research Lessons


Assignments Within Google Docs: For each research lesson, individual Docs are assigned to individual students and new Docs are made available only when all previous Docs have been satisfactorily completed. If it becomes necessary to revise an assignment, students should pay close attention to recommended revisions and other commentary, all of which will be provided in the “Comment Steam” of each document.

Part 1: Topic Selection and Developing Research Questions
Days 1-4: December 7 – December 13

  1. Complete all readings and viewing associated with the Preliminary Step on the Research Paper Steps page.
  2. Complete all readings and viewing associated with Step 1 on the Research Paper Steps page.
  3. Using basic information sources, investigate potential research paper topics.
  4. Complete your assigned Google Doc: Topic Proposal (#1).
  5. Complete all readings and viewings associated with Step 2 on the Research Paper Steps Page.
  6. Complete your assigned Google Doc: Primary Question and Focus Questions (#2).

Part 2: Searching for Quality Information Sources
Days 5-10: December 14 – December 21

  1. Complete all readings and viewing associated with Step 3 on the Research Paper Steps page.
  2. Complete all readings and viewing associated with Step 4 on the Research Paper Steps page.
  3. Complete your assigned Google Doc: Creating Search Terms (#3).
  4. Complete all readings and viewing associated with Step 5 on the Research Paper Steps page, excluding Questia video.
  5. Complete your assigned Google Doc: Initial Book & Periodical Sources (#4).
  6. Complete your assigned Google Doc: Best Book & Periodical Sources (#5).
  7. Complete your assigned Google Doc: Most Useful Websites (#6).

Part 3: Taking Notes & Organizing Information Sources
Days 11-15: December 22 – January 6

  1. Complete all readings and viewing associated with Step 6 on the Research Paper Steps page.
  2. Complete your assigned Google Doc: EasyBib Works Cited Page (#7).
  3. Complete your assigned Google Doc: 1st Focus Question Info Sheet(s) (#8).
  4. Complete your assigned Google Doc: 2nd Focus Question Info Sheet(s) (#9).
  5. Complete your assigned Google Doc: 3rd Focus Question Info Sheet(s) (#10).

Part 4: Writing Your Paper
Days 16-22: January 9 – January 19

  1. Complete all readings and viewing associated with Step 7 on the Research Paper Steps page.
  2. Complete all readings and viewing associated with Step 8 on the Research Paper Steps page.
  3. Complete your assigned Google Doc: Outline (#11).
  4. Complete your assigned Google Doc: Introductory Paragraph (#12).
  5. Complete your assigned Google Doc: First Three or Four Paragraphs (#13).
  6. Complete all readings and viewing associated with Step 9 on the Research Paper Steps page.
  7. Complete your assigned Google Doc: Final Paper (#14).
